Lotus in the Swamp

I feel blessed to be able to reach out to you all and talk about this.

We’ve all been there. A problem lands on your desk, or in your life, that feels like a brick wall. It’s heavy, it’s opaque, and it’s tall enough to block out the sun. In those moments, fear doesn’t just knock—it moves in. We get bogged down in the "what ifs," convinced that because we can’t see a way out, there simply isn't one.

But here is the truth: The absence of a visible path is not evidence of a dead end.

The "Swamp" Mindset

I was recently reminded of this by a team I watched navigate a particularly brutal year. They were facing "swamp" conditions—the kind of murky, difficult environment where most people just get stuck and sink.

Instead of looking at the mud, they looked for the bloom. They adopted a philosophy that changed everything: they became problem-seekers, but with a twist. They didn't just find problems; they hunted for the "problem to the problem." They refused to be stopped by trouble.

They spoke often about the Lotus. If you know anything about the Lotus flower, you know its beauty is a paradox. It doesn’t bloom in pristine, filtered water. It blooms in the swamp. It takes the very muck that should choke it and uses it as fuel to rise.

Why You Can’t See the Solution (Yet)

When we are in a state of fear, our "tunnel vision" is literal. Our brains shift into survival mode, focusing entirely on the threat. When you are staring at the mud, you can’t see the sky.

 1. Fear is a Fog: It obscures the landscape. The bridge is still there; you just haven’t walked far enough into the mist to touch the railing.

2. Resilience is a Muscle: Like that team, staying positive isn't about being "happy-go-lucky." It’s about the disciplined refusal to let a temporary obstacle define your permanent destination.

3. Agility Over Ego: Often, we can't see the solution because we are looking for a specific solution. Being agile means being willing to pivot when the first five ideas fail.

Turning the Muck into Momentum

If you are feeling bogged down today, remember that the Lotus doesn’t wish the swamp away. It grows through it.

The solution to your current struggle exists right now. It might be hidden in a conversation you haven’t had yet, a skill you haven't mastered, or a perspective you haven't considered. Just because your eyes haven't adjusted to the light doesn't mean the light isn't there.

Stay positive. Stay resilient. Stay agile. Your bloom is coming. It’s just busy using the mud for fuel.
