Leave Room to Listen

Have you ever been so busy preparing your answer that you missed what someone was trying to tell you?

It happens easily. A suggestion sounds like criticism. A different opinion feels like a challenge. Before the other person has finished, we are already defending ourselves.

But you cannot learn much while you are guarding every old belief.

Listening does not mean agreeing with everything you hear. It means giving an idea enough room to be understood before you decide what to do with it.

Today, try one small experiment. In a conversation that matters, let the other person finish. Put your phone away. Resist the urge to turn their story into your own.

Then ask, "What am I missing?"

You may hear something useful. You may simply understand the person better. Both are worth the pause.

There is strength in knowing what you believe. There is also strength in allowing what you hear to teach you something.

You do not have to win every conversation. Sometimes the better thing to leave with is a little more understanding.
