Ralph Waldo Emerson

by Biography Base

We often hear quotations by Ralph Waldo Emerson. I thought it would be interesting to publish his biography. Ralph Waldo Emerson(May 25, 1803–April 27, 1882) was a famous American essayist and one of America's most influential thinkers and writers.

Life
Emerson was born in Boston, Massachusetts to a Unitarian minister and would later become a Unitarian minister himself. Emerson eventually, however, broke away from the doctrine of his superiors and formulated and expressed the philosophy of Transcendentalism in his 1836 essay Nature.

In 1810, when Emerson was eight years old, his father died. His father complained that Emerson couldn't read well enough when he was 3 years old. In October of 1817, at the age of 14, Emerson went to Harvard University and was appointed President's Freshman, a position which gave him a room free of charge. He waited at Commons, which reduced the cost of his board to one quarter, and he received a scholarship. He added to his slender means by tutoring and by teaching during the winter vacations at his Uncle Ripley's school in Waltham, Massachusetts.

After Emerson graduated from Harvard, he assisted his brother in a school for young ladies established in their mother's house; when his brother went to Göttingen to study divinity, Emerson took charge of the school. Over the next several years, Emerson made his living as a schoolmaster, eventually studying divinity himself, and emerging as a Unitaritan minister. A dispute with church officials over the administration of the Communion service led to his resignation. About the same time, his young wife and one true love, Miss Elena Louisa Tucker, died in February of 1831.

In 1832–33, Emerson toured Europe, a trip that he would later write about in English Traits (1856). During this trip, he met Wordsworth, Coleridge, John Stuart Mill, and Thomas Carlyle. Emerson maintained a correspondence with Carlyle until Carlyle's death in 1881.

In 1835, Emerson bought a house on the Cambridge Turnpike, in Concord, Massachusetts. He quickly became one of the leading citizens in the town.

In 1836, Emerson and other like-minded intellectuals founded The Dial, a periodical which served as a vehicle for the Transcendental movement, although the first issue did not appear until July of 1840. Meanwhile, Emerson published his first book, Nature, in September of 1836.

Early in 1842, Emerson lost his first son, Waldo, to scarlet fever. Emerson wrote about his grief in two major works: the poem "Threnody", and the essay "Experience".

Emerson is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord.

Works
Emerson's most important prose works are:

Nature (1836)
"The American Scholar" (1837, an address to Phi Beta Kappa Society at Harvard)
"The Divinity School Address" (1838)
Essays: First Series (1841; includes "Compensation", "Self-Reliance", and "Circles")
"The Transcendentalist" (1841)
Essays: Second Series (1844; includes "The Poet", "Experience", and "Politics")
Representative Men (1850; features essays on Napoleon, Plato, Montaigne, Shakespeare, and Goethe)
English Traits (1856)
The Conduct of Life (1860; includes "Fate" and "Power")
"Thoreau" (1862; a eulogy for Henry David Thoreau)
Although he is more generally recognized as an essayist, Emerson also wrote poetry. His poems include "Threnody", "Uriel", "Works and Days", and the well-known "Concord Hymn" (origin of the phrase "The shot heard round the world").

Quotations
"It is very unhappy, but too late to be helped, the discovery that we exist. That discovery is called the Fall of Man." ("Experience," 1844)

"I had better never see a book, than to be warped by its attraction clean out of my own orbit, and made a satellite instead of a system. The one thing in the world, of value, is the active soul." ("The American Scholar," 1837)

"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do. He may as well concern himself with his shadow on the wall." ("Self-Reliance," 1841)

Expanding the Inner Awareness

Always try to find out how do things feel? You can direct that god force within you. What you focus on.. the god force is flowing towards it. What you focus on will manifest.

Police your dialogs and say things which elevate you. Stop accepting things that destroy balance.

Response to negativity...I DONT ACCEPT IT, EVERYTHING COMES TO ME FROM POSITIVITY.

Power comes from serenity of emotions.
Stop struggling with yourself. As emotions calm down power rises. You will use this power to heal.

In your silent time ask the infinity to show you something which you have not seen been before in the next 24 hours and you will always be excited to experience the day ahead.

Tao Te Ching !!

The Tao Te Ching, roughly translatable as The Book of the Way and its Virtue. According to tradition, it was written around 6th century BC by the Taoist sage Lao Tzu, "Old Master", a record-keeper at the Zhou Dynasty court. The text's authorship and date of composition or compilation are still debated.

Why am I talking about Tao Te Ching?
Because it is profound. All the self-help quick fixes you look for can be answered by Tao, but in a rather spiritual way.

It is the smallest philosophy I have came across. It has 81 versus and each verse has a heading like Ambition, Calm, Fate etc. Anytime you are confused just look over and let go of that emotion which is bothering you.

You can find the Tao Te Ching at TaoTeChing.org

Some versus which I like:

Ambition
Those who wish to change the world
According with their desire
cannot succeed.

The world is shaped by the Way;
It cannot be shaped by the self.
Trying to change it, you damage it;
Trying to possess it, you lose it.

So some will lead, while others follow.
Some will be warm, others cold
Some will be strong, others weak.
Some will get where they are going
While others fall by the side of the road.

So the sage will be neither extravagant nor violent.

Harmony
Embracing the Way, you become embraced;
Breathing gently, you become newborn;
Clearing your mind, you become clear;
Nurturing your children, you become impartial;
Opening your heart, you become accepted;
Accepting the world, you embrace the Way.

Bearing and nurturing,
Creating but not owning,
Giving without demanding,
This is harmony.

Mind
The Way bears sensation,
Sensation bears memory,
Sensation and memory bear abstraction,
And abstraction bears all the world;
Each thing in the world bears feeling and doing,
And, imbued with mind, harmony with the Way.

As others have taught, so do I teach,
"Who loses harmony opposes nature";
This is the root of my teaching.

Care at the Beginning
What lies still is easy to grasp;
What lies far off is easy to anticipate;
What is brittle is easy to shatter;
What is small is easy to disperse.

Yet a tree broader than a man can
embrace is born of a tiny shoot;
A dam greater than a river can
overflow starts with a clod of earth;
A journey of a thousand miles begins at the spot under one's feet.

Therefore deal with things before they happen;
Create order before there is confusion.

Power of Giving !!!

I just want to share a small story with you all. The story is about giving. Don't mistake giving with spending.

Last year in November I decided that every month I will give $100 to feed the hungry. I was not expecting anything and little did I know what message I am giving to the universe.

So came November 31st and I gave $100 to World Vision, December 31st I gave $100 to World Vision and so on if I missed a month then I made sure that the following month I gave $200. I really started to enjoy giving. Now November was also the time I started my own company and I was just looking back yesterday, the money I have given has came back to me more than 100 folds.

I was extremely surprise as I was not expecting anything. I now realize the power of giving and selflessness. So I encourage you all to make a small shift and start giving. You do not have to give money, you can give people a smile or happiness. Just do it out of selflessness and it will give you a peace at heart knowing you have made a difference.

I was rather intrigued by this phenomenon. It is very similar to the concept of Tith as talked about in the Bible. Regardless of its origin I believe in the power of giving and I encourage you to practice it for yourself and let me know your experience.

Enjoy your being !

Think and Grow Rich !

Think and Grow Rich is another classic book which everyone has heard about. This video below highlights some quotes from the book. I find the quotes are very uplifting and will help you to re-focus if you have lost focus. Enjoy your success !!

Seven Habits of Highly Effective People !!

Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey is an excellent book that probably almost everyone has heard of. Millions of people have read it, but unfortunately many people don't make the commitment to actually apply the habits in their everyday life. If they did, it's a "can't miss" success formula. However, it is not an "instant fix" formula that is the rub for many.

Anybody can drastically improve their effectiveness if they simply take the time to master what Covey is trying to convey to them. The beauty of these habits is just that, they are habits. You don't have to change your personality, to become effective. You have to adopt new habits. Once a habit becomes part of your daily routine, the effectiveness just kicks in automatically.

Covey argues, our viewpoint needs to be driven by a principals-based approach, to live our life according to principals we value and hold dear. These principals are permanent and unchanging - like a rock in a storm.He states that we can build our self-confidence by making personal commitments to ourselves - and keeping them. Each time we do, our self-confidence increases. We live our life according to certain "scripts" that we've acquired and developed along the way. In fact, as intelligent beings, we have a "space" between the stimulus and the reaction which allows us to create our own scripts.

Our relationship with ourselves and others is based on deposits and withdrawals to emotional bank accounts. Every time we honor a commitment, we make a deposit. Every time we break one, we make a withdrawal. The key point here is to never make a commitment unless you're sure you can honor it, and if you can't honor it, do your best to explain why. Don't take your commitments casually.

Take, for example, the problem of stress. Well, one major cause of stress and burnout is that people are constantly living in "crisis mode" - i.e. going from one crisis to another. Covey shows how to deal with that. He has a very simple habit (which will take some effort to implement in spite of that, just because most of us habitually do not do this) by which you can prevent crisis from occurring in the first place, or at least prevent crisis from being as bad when they do occur.

Another thing that was very helpful to me was his chapter on pro-activity. Basically, we might not always get to choose our circumstances (all of us have been in circumstances we did not want to be in before), but we can all choose how we respond to these circumstances.

An interesting exercise he performs regularly with college students: visualize that you only have this semester/quarter to live. During that time, you are to stay in school as a good student. What would you do differently? It has apparently had some amazing results. It's interesting to think about; too often we lose sight of what's really important I think.

The book sticks to seven pivotal habits which are:
1. Be Proactive !
You create your own behavior. You have the ability to choose your responses to life. You are as you are today because of the choices you made yesterday. Replace "I have to.." with "I choose to...".
2. Begin with the end in mind
First create your principles. This is leadership (vs. management). Realize all things are created twice. The first time is in your mind. Write your mission statement that lists the values you want to live by.
3. Put first things first
Prioritize every day. What is one thing that you could do on a regular basis that would make a tremendous improvement in your life? Do it. List out the roles you play in life. List out the most important goals in each. Map out time for each in the upcoming week.
4. Think win-win
Both parties should benefit from an agreement. This builds relationships. Agreements should cover the desired results, guidelines, accountability, standards and consequences.
5. Seek first to understand, then be understood
Listen to understand, not to reply. Listen with empathy and appreciation. Find out how they are 'centered'.
6. Synergize
The whole is greater than its parts. Creativity blossoms here.
7. Sharpening the saw
Spend at least a half hour everyday on your physical, spiritual, mental and social/emotional dimensions. Life is a process.

The 7 Habits are timeless. Covey spent his life trying to put The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People together, and it shows. I have read this book and I also own the audio version, which is recorded in the author's voice. Whichever you decide to do, you want to own this book, and take OWNERSHIP of its contents.

Now remember, you are not going to get out of a CD what you are going to get out of a book. They are radically different media experiences. With a book, you can annotate the margins, underline, write on the inside blank pages. With the CD's in the car, you are taking what is essentially wasted time, and turning it into wonderful, well-spent time. Covey's concept of "Sharpening the Saw", which is a summary of the habits, and how you can RENEW yourself is worth the whole price of the book or audio set alone.

Treat the book as a process of continuous learning about personal vision, leadership, management and human relations both at work and in family. Use it as my guide for dealing with people and in integrating the different responsibilities in life: professional, family and personal.

This is an exceptional book for those that wish to live a happy, healthy, meaningful and successful life and to increase productivity in both business and personal basis.

Truth

In order to express harmony, you must think harmony; in order to express health you must think health; and in order to express abundance you must think abundance; to do this you must reverse the evidence of the senses.

Every form of disease, sickness, lack and limitation are simply the result of wrong thinking. You will see how mountains may be removed. If these mountains consist only of doubt, fear, distrust or other forms of discouragement, they are none the less real, and they need not only to be removed but to be "cast into the sea."

As all conditions are thought creations and therefore entirely mental, disease and lack are simply mental conditions in which the person fails to perceive the truth; as soon as the error is removed, the condition is removed.

Go into the Silence and know the Truth; as all mind is one mind, you can do this for yourself or anyone else. If you have learned to form mental images of the conditions desired, this will be the easiest and quickest way to secure results; if not, results can be accomplished by argument, by the process of convincing yourself absolutely of the truth of your statement.

Remember, and this is one of the most difficult as well as most wonderful statements to grasp.... remember that no matter what the difficulty is, no matter where it is, no matter who is affected, you have no patient but yourself; you have nothing to do but to convince yourself of the truth which you desire to see manifested.

Every form of concentration, forming Mental Images, Argument, and Autosuggestion are all simply methods by which you are enabled to realize the Truth.

If you desire to help someone, to destroy some form of lack, limitation or error, the correct method is not to think of the person whom you wish to help; the intention to help them is entirely sufficient, as this puts you in mental touch with the person. Then drive out of your own mind any belief of lack, limitation, disease, danger, difficulty or whatever the trouble might be. As soon as you have succeeded is doing this the result will have been accomplished, and the person will be free.

To train the mind to see Truth only is to express true conditions only, our ability to do this will be an indication as to the progress we are making.

The absolute truth is that the "I" is perfect and complete; the real "I" is spiritual and can therefore never be less than perfect; it can never have any lack, limitation, or disease. Our ability to recognize this Unity which is the cause of all inspiration, all genius.

Your life and your actions and your influence in the world will depend upon the degree of truth which you are enabled to perceive, for truth will not manifest in creeds, but in conduct. Truth manifests in character, and the character of a man to him is truth, and this will in turn be evidenced in the character of his possession. If a man complains of the drift of his fortune he is just as unjust to himself as if he should deny rational truth, though it stands patent and irrefutable.

Our environment and the innumerable circumstances and accidents of our lives already exist in the subconscious personality which attracts to itself the mental and physical material which is congenial to its nature.
Thus our future being determined from our present, and if there should be apparent injustice in any feature or phase of our personal life, we must look within for the cause, try to discover the mental fact which is responsible for the outward manifestation.
If you see only the incomplete, the imperfect, the relative, the limited, these conditions will manifest in your life; but if you train your mind to see and realize the spiritual ego, the "I" which is forever perfect and complete, harmonious; wholesome, and healthful conditions only will be manifested.

As thought is creative, and the truth is the highest and most perfect thought which anyone can think, it is self-evident that to think the truth is to create that which is true and it is again evident that when truth comes into being that which is false must cease to be.

The minute the spirit leaves the body, we are as nothing. Therefore, spirit is really, all there is of us. Now, the only activity which the spirit possesses is the power to think. Therefore, thought must be creative, because spirit is creative. This creative power is impersonal and your ability to think is your ability to control it and make use of it for the benefit of yourself and others.
When the truth of this statement is realized, understood, and appreciated, you will have come into possession of the Master-Key, but remember that only those who are wise enough to understand, broad enough to weigh the evidence, firm enough to follow their own judgment, and strong enough to make the sacrifice exacted, may enter and partake.

This week, try to realize that this is truly a wonderful world in which we live, that you are a wonderful being that many are awakening to a knowledge of the Truth, and as fast as they awake and come into a knowledge of the "things which have been prepared for them" they, too, realize that "Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither hath it entered into the heart of man," the splendors which exist for those who find themselves in the Promised Land. They have crossed the river of judgment and have arrived at the point of discrimination between the true and the false, and have found that all they ever willed or dreamed, was but a faint concept of the dazzling reality.

What is meant by thinking?
Clear, decisive, calm, deliberate, sustained thought with a definite end in view.

What will be the result?
You will also be able to say, "It is not I that doeth the works, but the ‘Father’ that dwelleth within me, He doeth the works." You will come to know that the "Father" is the Universal Mind and that He does really and truly dwell within you.

"This life is yours. Take the power to choose what you want to do and do it well. Take the power to love what you want in life and love it honestly. Quote: Rudolph Giuliani !

The hallmark of the fully mature, fully functioning, self-actualizing personality is the ability to be objective and unemotional when caught up in the inevitable storms of daily life. The superior person has the ability to continue talking to himself in a positive and optimistic way, keeping his mind calm, clear and completely under control. The mature personality is more relaxed and aware and capable of interpreting events more realistically and less emotionally than is the immature personality. As a result, the mature person exerts a far greater sense of control and influence over his environment, and is far less likely to be angry, upset, or distracted. My father used to say to me, “Whenever you get into a jam, whenever you get into a crisis or an emergency . . .become the calmest person in the room and you’ll be able to figure your way out of it.”

Networking: Meeting the Big Fish

By Greg Brill, Founder of Infusion Development and Co-Founder of Infusion Angels

As an entrepreneur, you’ll regularly find yourself in an awkward position; you’ll need something from someone who doesn’t know you. You may need a technical opinion, introduction to someone else, funding, business advice…maybe there is someone you respect and just want to meet. Of course, these people might be wealthy, powerful, brilliant, intimidating…possibly, they may be all of those.

And then there’s you. Young, technically knowledgeable, full of great ideas and energy, but let’s face it: the only networking you know how to do probably involves Ethernet.

So how do you do approach someone you don’t know but need to know? Assume you’ve just heard someone speak at a seminar, and you want to talk to them afterwards. You will probably be relieved to hear that the ability to smooth talk doesn’t figure into it much. You don’t need to be slick, you need to just remember (and adhere to) the following rules of engagement:

a) Know what you want from a person *before* you approach them.

b) Introduce yourself with a polite greeting.

c) Get to “a” quickly

d) Listen to what they say

e) Secure follow-up action

f) Disengage

Call this the IPNP, the Inter-Personal-Networking-Protocol. I won't hold my breath for IEEE endorsement, but following these rules will help you develop meet, talk to, and develop initial relationships with people you encounter in social situations. Let’s go through them.

A: Successful people have limited time. So, when they meet you, they subconsciously try to do one of two things within the first few seconds: 1) disregard and dismiss you as quickly as possible or 2) if you seems credible, determine what you want of them and whether they are interested in helping. No matter how friendly they may be, this internal process is probably underway after “hello.” Therefore, know what you want of the person and be prepared to communicate that clearly very early on. Consider it like the thesis statement of an essay (remember writing those in high school?). If you know what you want, that will come across. It will keep them from disregarding you. If you are not clear on what you want in your own mind, you will appear ambling and will be shown the door.

B: There’s nothing wrong with being formal. When you are young, and you try to be slick it will come across a bit garish to the more worldly. Be polite, friendly and a little formal. It shows respect and sets you apart. When a more established, older person, sees a young, well-dressed, polite young professional…it will impress them right from the start. Seems old school and silly, it felt that way even to me when I was younger. But as I’ve gotten older and busier, I need to “thin slice” and size up people quickly. Polite professional demeanor is something I look for. Lack of it sets off an immediate flag.

C: Make it clear what you want from the person. Don’t try to engage them in small talk. You are not good at that and your counterpart doesn’t have the time and interest nor, probably, do you have enough shared experience in life. So, bring up very early on what you want of the person. You might think it is rude but actually, brevity is much appreciated by true business people. Business is nothing but the exchange of wants. What you want is the very language and structure of business. That is, what you want balanced by what they want. The venn between these two wants is opportunity, the proverbial “win win.” So get to the point already!

D: If you do A-C correctly, your contact will start talking now. He/she will respond to you and what you want. LISTEN. Shut up. Resist the urge to speak. If you have your contact talking, you have succeeded in a big way. Listen to what they say and look for the follow up action (E).

E: D should turn into a dialog between the two of you. If you are lucky, your contact will suggest a follow up. That might be “call me later and we can talk more” or “ok, I’ll introduce you to so and so” or “try what I suggest and let me know how it goes.” All these are good. They are follow-ups. Congratulations, you’ve succeeded. Now don’t screw it up. Move quickly to F. If the contact does not suggest a follow up, you might not have done C correctly. Correct if you can. If there is still nothing, then, you need to suggest the follow up item. If contact doesn’t seem to agree, hey…that’s life. You tried. Move to F. If your goal was just to meet the person and/or get a quick opinion on something, you don’t need a follow up item. Move to F.

F: Disengage. Make your exit. There is some traditional advice given to new salesman, “know when to stop selling.” A variant of this advice is, “Don’t sell when their signing.” There comes a point where you have “made the sale”. There is also a reason a TV commerical is 15 or 30 seconds and not an hour and a half. If you keep on jabbering, all you can do is un-sell what you just sold. So, if you have your follow-up item and/or you’ve communicated to this person what you needed to and D went well, then it is time for you to go. Relationships are built from repeated small touches in different circumstances, and NOT from long, deep encounters. Do not cling, hang around, or, as evanglists at Microsoft joke about, don’t “dock.” (they are referring to that particular breed of seminar attendee that ambles up to the presenter after the seminar and won’t leave. What you in Canada might call “keeners.”) Rest assured, if you hang around too long, you’ll wear out your welcome and you’ll force your contact to invent reasons to remove themselves from your presence. If that happens, you’ve undone the good work in A-E. So, better you remove yourself rather than have the contact start giving you hints like looking at his/her watch or saying, “I have a call I have to be on.” End the encounter like you started it, follow the rules of B. Thank the person for their time, quickly reiterate the follow-up item, and excuse yourself. When you excuse yourself you are actually asserting power. Your contact will be impressed at some subconscious level, and he/she may actually extend the conversation and keep you there (subconsciously they are trying to take the power back.) The psychology of all this may be the subject of a future article, for now, if you excuse yourself and they keep you around, congratulations! You’ve really impressed your contact.

Well, I’m well beyond my word count for this column. So, I’ll conclude with this offer: next time I speak at UofW, try these out on me. Or, for those of you interested in starting a venture with Infusion Angels and giving us a pitch, try these techniques out on any of my staff…I just bet you’ll find them and, perhaps, most successful people to be IPNP compliant!

The Power of your Spirit !!

Money weaves itself into the entire fabric of our very existence; that the law of success is service; that we get what we give, and for this reason we should consider it a great privilege to be able to give.

We have found that thought is the creative activity behind every constructive enterprise. Creative thought requires attention, and the power of attention is, as we have found, the weapon of the Super-man. Attention develops concentration, and concentration develops Spiritual Power, and Spiritual Power is the mightiest force in existence.

Perfection in this is not acquired in six days, nor in six weeks, nor in six months. It is the labor of life. Not to go forward is to go backward. It is inevitable that the entertainment of positive, constructive and unselfish thoughts should have a far-reaching effect for good. Compensation is the keynote of the universe. Nature is constantly seeking to strike an equilibrium. Where something is sent out something must be received; else there should be a vacuum formed.

The money consciousness is an attitude of mind; it is the open door to the arteries of commerce. It is the receptive attitude. We make money by making friends, and we enlarge our circle of friends by making money for them, by helping them, by being of service to them.

The first law of success then is service, and this in turn is built on integrity and justice. The man who at least is not fair in his intention is simply ignorant; he has missed the fundamental law of all exchange;

The forces of life are volatile; they are composed of our thoughts and ideals and these in turn are molded into form; our problem is to keep an open mind, to constantly reach out for the new, to recognize opportunity, to be interested in the race rather than the goal, for the pleasure is in the pursuit rather than the possession.

If you have the necessary insight to perceive and utilize opportunities and favorable conditions and recognize values, you can put yourself in position to take advantage of them, but your greatest success will come as you are enabled to assist others. What benefits one must benefit all.

A generous thought is filled with strength and vitality, a selfish thought contains the germs of dissolution; it will disintegrate and pass away. If we recognize the Omnipotent power that is the source of all supply we will adjust our consciousness to this supply in such a way that it will constantly attract all that is necessary to itself and we shall find that the more we give the more we get.

Morgan, Rockefeller, Carnegie and others did not get rich because they lost money for other people; on the contrary, it is because they made money for other people that they became the wealthiest men in the wealthiest country on the globe.

The power of attention is called concentration; this power is directed by the will; for this reason we must refuse to concentrate or think of anything except the things we desire.

"Spirit, whatever else it may or may not be, must be considered as the Essence of Consciousness, the Substance of Mind, the reality underlying Thought. And as all ideas are phases of the activity of Consciousness, Mind or Thought, it follows that in Spirit, and in it alone, is to be found the Ultimate Fact, the Real Thing, or Idea."

Exercise: Concentrate on the fact that man is not a body with a spirit, but a spirit with a body, and that it is for this reason that his desires are incapable of any permanent satisfaction in anything not spiritual. Money is therefore of no value except to bring about the conditions which we desire, and these conditions are necessarily harmonious. Harmonious conditions necessitate sufficient supply, so that if there appears to be any lack, we should realize that the idea or soul of money is service, and as this thought takes form, channels of supply will be opened, and you will have the satisfaction of knowing that spiritual methods are entirely practical.

Why do the great majority in every country remain the docile and apparently willing tools of the few? Because they let the few do all their thinking for them.
What is the effect of concentrating upon gain? More gain.
